Ludhiana, March 29
The United Platform of IDBI Bank Union has called for four days’ nationwide strike in all IDBI bank branches from March 28 to 31.
The bank’s union is opposing the government’s move to privatise IDBI bank. In the Union Budget speech given by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on February 29, it was mentioned that the government has an option to reduce the stake in IDBI bank below 50 per cent. The statement created unrest among employees. Public sector banks have been performing well in all segments of social banking and implementing all social security schemes of the government wholeheartedly. The PSBs are backbone for the economy of any country and especially for the MSMEs, artisans, farmers and building entrepreneurs. The very purpose of banking was defeated when a public sector bank was being sold in private hands. The government’s unilateral move was not at all appreciated and strongly opposed. All branches of Ludhiana and Punjab remained closed on the call of four days’ strike. Thousands of agitating employees gathered at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, and staged a dharna on the first day of the four-day strike.
