Chandigarh, July 10
It sounds strange but the fact is that due to the lackadaisical attitude of Panjab University departments, a large number of students missed the opportunity of securing admission to various courses at the varsity this year.
Figure this out: The university departments are denying admission to those who do not have the original detail mark-sheet (DMC) of the previous class during the counselling.
The PU examination branch had uploaded results of all graduate courses online so that if there was any delay in issuing the DMC, the departments could verify the result on website and admit students on the basis of it.
The worst hit are those qualified the entrance exam but could not appear for the counselling due to the lack of the original DMC.
PU Controller of Examination Parvinder Singh confirmed that more than 100 student today approached him for the issuing of confidential DMCs so that they could appear for the counselling. He said it was strange that no university department was checking the results online. He said no such complaint had been received from the colleges as they were verifying results online.
Another issue that caused a great inconvenience to the students is the delay in the announcement of the merit list. The students, who appeared for the counselling, did not know that only a single working day was left to deposit the fee if they were selected.
AK Bhadari, Dean, University Instruction, confirmed that a large number of students came to him, requesting him to admit them without producing the original DMC during the counselling as their result had been delayed. But the problem is that there is no provision in the university calendar to admit the students, who fail to produce the original DMC during the counselling.
The students were left with no other option but to appear for second counselling, if the seats remained vacant. The authorities are trying to release merit lists of all departments by Saturday.
Traffic chaos
As the admission process at various departments is on, an acute parking problem near the administrative block of Panjab University was witnessed on Friday. Long traffic jams were witnessed as a large number of students turned up for admissions with their vehicles.
