Chandigarh, July 11
Senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala today moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court for security cover alleging a sinister conspiracy to eliminate him due to political considerations.
Taking up the matter, Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain of the High Court issued notice of motion to the Union of India, Haryana and other respondents. The case will now come up on July 19 for further hearing.
Surjewala asked for security cover by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) due to threats faced by him as a result of “suspicious escape” of “dreaded gangster” Surinder Geong, and the state government’s simultaneous action of withdrawing an Inspector from his personal security team.
Surjewala claimed that a day after news of the alleged gangster’s escape surfaced, the state DGP issued an order for withdrawal of an Inspector from his personal security team.
His counsel told the court that the Geong group was one of the most prominent criminal gangs in the petitioner’s constituency of Kaithal. The petitioner, earlier as a minister, had publicly stated his and the government’s resolve to ensure decisive and quick action against notorious criminal gangs.
The Haryana government granted parole to Geong in May for construction of a house.
Subsequently, the petitioner called the state DGP to point out the “gross error” in granting parole to such a “dreaded gangster”.
Geong jumped parole and did not report back in June. Surjewala added the developments pointed at a sinister conspiracy to eliminate him
