Dehradun, December 1
Major General Balraj Mehta, General Officer Commanding of Uttarakhand Subarea, Dehradun, inaugurated Swachhata Pakhwada here today. The event is being organised by 7 Infantry Battalion (TA) Eco Garhwal Rifles to mark the raising day of the unit on December 1, 1982.
All senior officers of Dehradun Garrison attended the event. Major Gen Mehta elaborated the importance of the Swachhata Mission to all present. He also planted a sapling.
On December 1, 1982, this unique Army environment unit was raised at the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre, Lansdowne, to restore the ecological balance in Mussoorie hills, which were then devastated by illegal mining activities and cutting of forests. The unit made efforts of afforestation to restore the green cover of Mussoorie also considering the changing weather patterns.
The Garrison would dedicated the event to make the Cantonment area of Garhi, Birpur and Ghangora free of garbage. The Army would spread awareness about a clean, green and healthy Uttarakhand.
