Three killed in mishap

Vipan Sharma (34), a milk vendor of Basanti Chowk, Sriganganagar, and Ram Lal Meghwal (40) of Maler village, died as unidentified vehicles reportedly hit them on Suratgarh Road and Gomawali terminal on Friday. Karnail Singh (85) of 70RB village in Sriganganagar was run over by a train.

Body found
The body of Gurjant Singh (54) of Harau village of Sangrur district has been found in Bhukarka sub-canal in Hanumangarh. Punjab Police said his motorcycle and other belongings were found near a canal in Patran on February 21. The body was handed over to his kin after a postmortem on Friday.

Protest after cows found dead
Tension gripped Jalalabad after the carcasses of eight cows and six bulls were found from various parts of the town. The activists of Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal held a protest and demanded that the accused be nabbed. The carcasses were found near Ram Leela Chowk, DAV college, BDPO office, Grain Market, FF Road and Lalla Basti. On the basis of the statement of Rajiv Dahuja, president, Gau Samiti, Jalalabad, the police have booked unidentified persons. Veterinary Officer Dr Ashish Chugh said prima facie it seemed a case of poisoning.

Cop commits suicide
A constable allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at his residence at Daroli Bhai village on Friday. The victim, Rajwant Singh (28) rushed to a private hospital, but he could not survive. He was on leave for two days.

2 booked for graft
A manager and another employee of the Punjab State Ware House Corporation have been booked for embezzling wheat worth over Rs 1 crore from godowns in Bhikhiwind. The accused have been identified as Swinder Pal Singh, Manager, and Satish Kumar.

Sikh leaders detained
Following the arrest of Surat Singh Khalsa, who was agitating over the issue of Sikh detainees, the police have also started detaining his aides. Sikh Youth Federation representative said those detained were United Akali Dal chief Bhai Mohkam Singh, their general secretary Gurdeep Bathinda and Jasbir Mandiala.

Rs 8 cr spent on food scheme
The Women and Child Development Department has spent Rs 8.10 crore on providing nutritious food to about 7.8 lakh children under the Poshak Aahar scheme in the district. Deputy Commissioner, Kamaldeep Singh Sangha said the scheme aimed at improving the health of children up to 6 years and ensure their physical, psychological and societal development. He said 62,211 children in the age group of 6 months to 6 years and 17,228 pregnant women were provided with food.

Yadavindra Public School celebrated its 66th annual academic day here on Friday. Lt Gen KJ Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Command, was the chief guest.
