Addressing the protest, Vipin Thaman, a former councillor, said shopkeepers had been facing civic problems in the area for the past several months and due to the overflowing sewers, sewage accumulated in the market and emanated foul smell. Officials of the Municipal Council were not taking the issue seriously while the public was at the receiving end, Vipin alleged.

Shopkeepers alleged that they were losing business due to puddles of dirty water in the market and had been unable to even open their establishments.

The protest was called off after Municipal Council officials assured the protesters that the problem of overflowing sewers would be resolved at the earliest.

Rajesh Kumar, Executive Officer, Municipal Council, said, “Due to construction of flyover, the roads were dug up. Due to this, sewer pipes might have been damaged. He said he would get these checked soon to resolve the problem.
