The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) today organised the birth centenary celebrations of late Dr PN Chhuttani at Bhargava Auditoriumon the premises of the institute.
Dr PN Chhuttani, regarded as one of the founders of the institution, was the Emeritus Professor of Medicine, PGIMER. He retired as the longest serving director (1969 to 1978) of the institute. He was also one of The Tribune trustees.
Born at Layyah (Pakistan), he did MBBS from Panjab University in 1938, diploma in Tropical Medicine from Calcutta in 1940 and MD in Medicine from Panjab University in 1942. He served as a teaching physician at Lahore, Amritsar and Patiala medical colleges before joining PGI, as one of its founder faculty members. He was conferred the degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) by Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and was awarded Padma Bhushan, Dr BC Roy National Award and Shakuntala Amir Chand Prize of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
PGI director Prof YK Chawla briefed the outstanding biography of Dr PN Chhuttanni. Former directors and faculty members Prof BK Sharma, Prof BNS Walia, Prof BL Talwar, Prof KS Chugh and Prof JB Dilawari and some famous personalities, including former Vice-Chancellor of PAnjab University Prof Bamba, MP Ashok Khanna and Rajneesh Watts reminisced there memorable association and interactions with Dr PN Chhuttani and paid tributes to commemorate the occasion.
A short documentary film on the life and contributions of Dr PN Chhuttani was screened during celebrations.
