Two brothers went missing as the car they were travelling in swept away in a swollen canal in Chorgaliya area of Nainital district following heavy rain.
The incident took place around 11 pm yesterday.
District Disaster Management Office said ten persons were travelling by the car when it fell into the canal and was swept away by its swirling waters.
Eight persons out of the ten were rescued alive but two were missing, it said.
Disaster management teams and police personnel were still scouring the canal in search of the two brothers. The vehicle was going from Banfulpura in Haldwani to Nanakmatta in Udham Singh Nagar district at the time of the accident.
The two brothers have been identified as Nishan (20) and Rehan (17), both residents of Haldwani.
Meanwhile, heavy rain lashed several places in Nainital district last evening. Chorgaliya received 153 mm of rain followed by Haldwani 130 mm, Nainital 83.82 mm and Dhari 66.20 mm.
The Met Department has issued an alert of heavy rain in Nainital, Dehradun, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar and Udham Singh Nagar over the next 24 hours. — PTI
