A fire tender from the Sector 32 fire station was immediately pressed into service to douse the leaping flames.

Manish Bayal whose Maruti 800 was completely charred, said, “I was up till 12.30 am and the security alarm of my car started beeping. I switched it off and went to sleep. Around 1.15 am, my neighbours woke me up to inform that my car had been set on fire.” Bayal had bought the car a week ago to train himself in driving.

He said caps of liquor bottles caps were found from near his car.

“It seems the assailants were drunk and randomly set vehicles on fire,” he added.

Deepak Kumar, whose motorcycle was set on fire, said, “Before anyone could react, the accused managed to flee from the spot.”

Sources said the miscreants probably used petrol to set the vehicles on fire.

“Petrol from around half a dozen motorbikes was stolen on the same night. It seems the accused used it to set the vehicles ablaze”, said a local resident.

Though a CCTV camera was also installed at a house, it failed to capture the footage of the accused.

Meanwhile, a case under Sections 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage to amount of 100 or 10 rupees) and 34 (act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), IPC, has been registered at the Sector 34 police station. The police are investigating the incident.
