Chandigarh, November 1
Web-based taxi operators in the city have been given 15 days time to register with the State Transport Authority (STA), Chandigarh, or face action. The operators have been asked to adhere to the advisory issued by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Amit Talwar, Joint Secretary, Transport Department, Chandigarh, said action would be taken against the erring taxi operators under the Motor Vehicle Act.
Earlier, due to non-registration of web-based taxis in the city, the Transport Wing, UT, had no means of punishing or nailing down the operators. Web-based taxis are not registered under the radio taxi scheme as they operate under the all-India tourist permit. Operators have been asked to develop and include features in mobile application that enable customers to share their location with at least two persons and enable them contact the local police in case of emergency. — TNS
