Whistleblower Navtej Singh Guggu, who has put up hoardings in Gurdaspur and Batala accusing prominent Akali leaders and others, including chemists, of being involved in the drug trade, has alleged that the police are targeting him at the behest of their “political masters”.

Batala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Daljinder Singh Dhillon said they had prepared a dossier of Guggu’s properties that would be forwarded to the New Delhi-based Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). The FIU is a central government agency that processes information related to suspect financial transactions.

Guggu held a protest in Batala today, while again putting up hoardings bearing names of ‘drug smugglers’. “Instead of taking action against me, the cops should arrest the people I have named,” he said.

The SSP said Guggu had been repeatedly caught smuggling ‘commercial stock heroin.’ This type of heroin is usually purchased by international smuggling cartels. “Several cases, including those under the Arms Act, have been registered against him in the past. Huge amounts of money flowed in from abroad after he allegedly murdered Nihang Ajit Singh Phoola in the Amritsar jail in 2008. We also have proof that he has encroached upon a tract of Wakf Board land in Batala,” he added.
