To commemorate the 412th Parkash Purb of Guru Granth Sahib according to the original version of Nanakshahi calendar, the Sikh Youth of Punjab (SYP) will organise a conference on September 1 at Tanda.
The first Parkash Purb (opening ceremony) of Guru Granth Sahib was performed at Darbar Sahib by Guru Arjan Dev in 1604. As per the original Nanakshahi calendar, the date of this Gurpurb was fixed for September 1. The SGPC — following the amended version — is observing the day on September 2.
The SYP, the youth wing of Dal Khalsa, has rejected the amendments made by the SGPC “under pressure from the ruling Akali Dal to appease the Sant Samaj”. It termed the changes in sync with the Hindu Bikrami calendar.
“We believe the amended version has the imprint of RSS ideology. Hence, we will stick to the original version and observe all Gurpurbs and festivals according to it,” said Paramjit Singh, president of the youth organisation. He slammed the SGPC and the Badals for re-implementing the Bikrami calendar in the guise of the Nanakshahi. He said the objective of the conference will be to uphold and re-enforce our faith towards the concept of Shabad-Guru.
