A resident of local Model Town was suspected to have died of dengue in a private hospital in Mohali on Tuesday. Asha Mittal (48) (in pic) was the wife of Paras Mittal, state treasurer of the INLD. Dr RP Goel, MS, civil hospital, said that although hundreds of persons were admitted with symptoms of dengue, they were discharged after treatment. No death has been reported on this count, he added.  — OC

Major rail mishap averted

A major rail mishap was averted at Dadri railway station when the engine of the Hisar-Rewari passenger train caught fire on Wednesday. Fire was doused by timely intervention of the railway authorities. The engine of passenger train caught fire owing to a spark near Dhalanwas village around 9 am. The engine driver stopped the train and informed the authorities concerned. — TNS

SC employees hold dharna

A dharna under the banner of the All-India Scheduled Caste Employees’ Federation was organised outside the residence of former minister Ganeshi Lal on Wednesday. Dalbir Sodhi, a spokesperson of the federation, said the SC employees had been demanding quota in promotion for long, but it was denied to them. He said that the SC employees wanted the government to take their stand in high court. —TNS

Rewari cricket team win

The Rewari District Bar Association team has won the third T-20 Lawyers’ Cricket Tournament organised by the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana. In the final match held at the Sector 16 cricket stadium on Wednesday, Rewari beat the Mewat team by six wickets. Twentyfour teams from Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh participated in the tournament. Hemender of the Rewari team got the Man of the Match trophy. — TNS

Rs 3 lakh withdrawn fraudulently

A youth withdrew Rs 3 lakh from the account of a local mason on the pretext of helping him in withdrawing money from an ICICI bank ATM near Devi Lal Chowk. On November 15, Krishan went to withdraw money, but could not operate the ATM. The youth, who is yet to be identified, offered him help and told him his password was incorrect. When Krishan approached the bank authorities, he came to know Rs 3 lakh were withdrawn from his account. — TNS

Two students go missing

Two students of two different local schools have gone missing from the Laxmi Nagar Kaithal road area of the city. The police have registered a case. Amarnath said his 16-year-old son Mahesh, who is a student of Jat Senior Secondary School, went to school on November 23, but did not return. He said another boy from their neighborhood — 18-year-old Deepak — had also been missing with his son. — TNS

Aamir Khan’s effigy burnt

Members of the Shahid Bhagat Singh Sabha on Wednesday burnt the effigy of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan outside the Dadri bus stand for his controversial remark on growing intolerance in the country. 4 booked for animal cruelty 

The Kaithal police have booked four persons under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act after they were found carrying 200 goats in two trucks on Tuesday. The accused, who belonged to Rajasthan, were arrested and three were later released on bail. Dinesh Kumar, secretary, Society for Prevention and Cruelty to Animals, said the goats were stuffed inside the trucks. Investigating officer Ishwar Singh said according to preliminary investigation, the goats were being taken for an animal fair in Ambala. —OC

Vij opens medical centre

Health Minister Anil Vij said the preaching of Guru Nanak Dev were not for a single community, but the entire humanity. He was speaking at the inauguration of a medical centre at the Defense colony to be run by the society of the gurdwara of the colony. Actor Som Dutt remembered

Family members, relatives and friends on Wednesday paid tributes to actor Som Dutt on his first death anniversary. Som Dutt was younger brother of Bollywood star Sunil Dutt. He had acted in several Hindi and Punjabi movies. His wife Punita Dutt said his Punjabi movie ‘Nanak Naam Jahaaz’, which was released in 1969, would be released again this Friday. — OC

Effigy of terrorism burnt

Members of the Sarva Dharma Sabha on Wednesday burnt the effigy of terrorism here. Liyakat Ali, Rasid Ali, Vijay Pal Kashyap, Habib Ahmed, Gurdeep Singh, Harpal Singh and other members of the sabha pledged to raise their voice against terrorist activities.
