Woman killed, 5 hurt in firing at ring ceremony

Karnal, November 15

A forty-year-old woman was killed and five others injured when guards of Sadhvi Deva Thakur, director, Deva India Foundation, opened fire during a ring ceremony at a banquet lawn in the city on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Sunita (40), a resident of Sector 6, while Amarjeet, a resident of Jyoti Nagar, Sukhwinder, a resident of Mann Colony, Vinod and Munny, residents of Indira Colony, and Anil, a resident of Preetam Nagar, were admitted to a private hospital on the Railway Road. Their condition is said to be stable.

"The police have booked Sadhvi Devi Thakur and her security guards under Section 302 of the IPC," said Mohan Lal, SHO, city.

The incident took place during the ring ceremony of Vicky Mehta, a resident of Sant Nagar, at Savitri Lawn near the railway station. The deceased was Vicky's aunt. 

The police said Sadhvi Deva Thakur, along with her security guards, fired gunshots into the air. They were on the dance floor. The accused would be arrested soon, said the SHO.

Several empty cartridges have been recovered from the spot. Firing is banned during marriage parties and social functions.
