Chhina Bidhi Chand (Tarn Taran), October 14
In yet another seizure, the Border Security Force in a joint operation with Counter Intelligence confiscated 12 kg heroin after an exchange of fire here last night.
BSF officials later held a flag meeting with their counterparts and lodged a protest.
Sumer Singh, DIG, BSF, Amritsar Sector, along with RS Kataria, Senior PRO, BSF, said the Counter Intelligence had a tip-off regarding the smuggling of heroin from Pakistan side in the Chhina Bidhi Chand border outpost area following which ambush parties were alerted. “At 4.20 am, the security personnel noticed some suspicious movements of three smugglers who were approaching towards an underground water channel near the border fence. The water channel is used to water fields across the barbed border fence,” said Sumer Singh.
The personnel challenged the smugglers who opened fire at them. The troops retaliated and fired around 16 rounds, following which the smugglers managed to escape taking advantage of standing crops and darkness.
The BSF men held a meeting with their Pakistani counterparts at the zero line to show the latter the footprints of Pakistani smugglers who entered into Indian territory to execute the smuggling bid.
Sources said a couple of Indian smugglers had also come near the spot under the garb of the standing crops. But during the exchange of fire, they fled.
They said the police had identified the smugglers and raids were being conducted to nab them.
