Keeping in view the threat of zika virus, the Health Department has decided to start fogging in the city a little earlier this year. The disease is caused by a virus transmitted by Aedes mosquito, the same species that spreads dengue and chicken gunia.
“Although no case of zika has been reported in the country, the Centre has decided to take preventive measures,” said Dr Ramesh, District Epidemiologist.
Fogging is generally started in June. But this year, the department has decided to start it in the city by April or May to check the breeding of mosquitoes.
“Besides, teams will visit areas and check houses for mosquito breeding. Since the temperature is low these days, chances are there that mosquitoes are hiding in dingy corners,” said Dr Ramesh.
He said the department appealed to residents not to let water accumulate near their houses. “Prevention is better than cure. Instead of acting late, we should start taking preventive measures right now,” he said.
There is no specific treatment or vaccine currently available for the treatment of zika. The best form of prevention is protection against mosquito bite, added Dr Ramesh.
People suffering from the zika virus disease usually have symptoms that can include mild fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise or headache. These symptoms normally last for two or seven days.
