Meena Ghadwal (32) and Vijender Malik (38) were on Monday unanimously elected as the chairperson and vice- chairman, respectively, of the Sonepat Zila Parishad. The post of ZP chairperson was reserved for SC women. Three SC women members—Meena Ghadwal from ward 1, Suman Butana from ward 5 and Arti Barona from ward 19— were eligible for the post. OC

Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday visited the Ambala Central Jail and the juvenile home to take stock of the facilities for inmates. He inspected the women’s ward, kitchen and other barracks. He interacted with inmates who were under medical treatment and enquired about the health facilities. TNS

Farmers seek relief

Farmers of several villages in Kalayat subdivision have sought special girdawari for assessment of crop loss due to recent spell of rain. Villagers on Monday submitted a memorandum to Om Parkash, sub-divisional magistrate, seeking immediate relief from the government. Farmers said they were no longer in a position to bear the crop loss, hence the government must come forward with adequate compensation. TNS

Rs 50 lakh jewellery looted

A 61-year-old woman was allegedly attacked by her two servants on Monday. They also stole jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh from her. The duo tied her in a bathroom and chopped off her ears for earrings and broke her fingers to get her rings, while her bed-ridden husband was in another room. The accused servants hailed from Bihar and were hired recently. TNS

INLD district head quits

Former MLA Dr Bishan Lal Saini resigned from the post of district president of the INLD on Tuesday. Citing familial circumstances as the reason behind the resignation, Dr Saini said he would continue to remain an active member of the party. Dr Saini served as district president for 8 years and was elected MLA twice, first time from Jagadhri on BSP ticket and then as INLD candidate from Radaur seat. TNS

World Water Day observed

Volunteers of the Social Action for Promotion of National Aspiration (SAPNA), led by Anand Sharma, state general secretary of CITU, today observed World Water Day by organising an awareness camp at Machhri village of the district. Tree saplings were also planted along the Machhri-Juan road. Speaking on the occasion, Sharma said “Jal Hee Kal Hai, Jal Hee Jeewan Hai” and it was the need of the hour to save water for the coming generations. OC
