Patiala, May 6
A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), who were sentenced to four-month jail for “failing to appear in a court to record their statements in a murder case”, have been granted bail.
They have decided to challenge the jail term in the higher court.
On Thursday, the local court of judicial magistrate Sukhwinder Singh pronounced the sentence on DSP Karansher Singh, posted at Fatehgarh Sahib, and ASI Harminder Singh, posted at Barnala, on the complaint of Additional District and Sessions Judge Rajinder Aggarwal, who had asked for initiating proceedings under Section 174 (non-attendance in obedience to an order from public servant) of the IPC.
The officers, according to the complaint, were legally bound to appear in the court to depose in a murder case registered when they were posted at the Tripuri police station. In the case registered against Harpreet Singh on April 16, 2012, the officers were given three reminders to appear in the court. But they did not appear on all three dates, resulting in a delayed trial.
