Former Chairman of the Press Council of India Justice Markandey Katju today minced no words to say that the judiciary in the country was not corruption-free.
Katju stated this while addressing the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar.
Known for his penchant for stirring controversies, Justice Katju claimed that the Uttar Pradesh Government had sent a list of some judges to the then Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. The list was forwarded to the Supreme Court. But nothing really happened and the then Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court was elevated as a Supreme Court judge.
Meanwhile, he reiterated that Mahatma Gandhi was a British agent. Justice Katju had, in fact, stated this in his blog. He had claimed that Mahatma Gandhi was ‘a British agent who did great harm to India’.
Justice Katju also made out a strong case for permitting lawyers to make their arguments in Hindi and Punjabi.
Prior to his appointment as the Press Council of India Chairman, Justice Katju was a Judge in the Supreme Court of India. Before being elevated as a Judge in the Supreme Court, he had served as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, the Madras High Court and the acting Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court.
