The widowed mother of one of the three teenaged engineering students, who died after their overspeeding Honda City car rammed into a tree last year, has been awarded a compensation of Rs 37.25 lakh by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT).

Judge RK Jain has ordered New India Assurance Company to pay the amount along with 6 per cent interest within two months or with 12 per cent interest beyond the two-month period.

Navdeep Arora counsel for petitioner said Vandana (49), a resident of Sector 7, Panchkula, mother of deceased Anish Garg (18) had filed the petition claiming for the grant of compensation from Sanjeev Walia, owner of the vehicle being driven by his now deceased son and the insurance firm.

Anish was a student of computer science at Chitkara University while Chinmay Walia was a student of the Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology (CCET).

On that fateful day, a total of five youths, all residents of Panchkula, had taken a turn towards Nayagaon at around 10.45 pm on October 31 on the road leading from Khuda Ali Sher to Punjab Engineering College while sitting in a car being driven by Chinmay at fast speed and in a rash and negligent manner.

When they reached near the DIG Farm House Khuda Ali Sher, their car went out of control and struck against a tree and overturned in an agricultural field beside the road.

In the mishap, along with Anish and Chinmay, Karan Sharma (19) also died while Aditya (18) and Gaurav (17) got injured. Cases of Chinamy and Karan are pending in a Panchkula MACT.

In its reply to the court, insurance company denied the factum of accident and other personal facts of the claimant for want of knowledge.

Only and bright son, played nationals

Anish Garg was a student of Computer Science and Engineering in school of Applied Sciences, Chitkara University. He was anall-rounder and was excelled in academics and sports. He had national-level badminton player.
