Chandigarh, May 8
In an accident dating back to 2012, in which three people were killed and four injured, the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) today awarded Rs 53.7 lakh compensation to seven persons.
Seven petitions were disposed of by District and Sessions Judge SK Aggarwal with this order. The petitioners included those who survived the mishap and the affected families of those who were killed.
The driver of the vehicle, Patrick, and the owner, Rajan Goel, have been directed to pay the fine jointly.
The Tribunal also ordered that the claimants are entitled to interest at the rate of 7.5 per cent per annum.
The accident took place on May 28, 2012, at about 11 am when Satish Mittal, one of the claimants, along with his wife Seema Mittal, daughter Chahat Mittal, Vaibhav Mittal (deceased), nieces Harshita Goel, Ritika Goel (deceased) and Ashok Kumar Goel (deceased) were coming from Leh to Chandigarh via Manali in a Ford Endeavour bearing a registration number of Chandigarh.
When the vehicle reached Romshary in Leh district, Patrick lost control over the vehicle and it fell into a 35-meter deep gorge. Vaibhav, Ritika and Ashok fell out of the vehicle and died. Satish also fell out and sustained serious injuries.
It was alleged that Patrick was driving the vehicle rashly, which resulted in the mishap.
