Need to refer more cases to mediation centre: SK Aggarwal

State Legal Services Authority, UT, Chandigarh, organised a “Mediation awareness and sensitisation programme’ at the District Courts here today.
The event was held under the aegis of the Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee of the Supreme Court of India, New Delhi, and under the guidance of Justice Shiavax Jal Vazifdar, Acting Chief Justice, Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC), and patron-in-chief of the authority, and Justice Hemant Gupta, an HC Judge and executive chairman of the authority.
Advocates, law students, mediators, para-legal volunteers and legal aid counsel took part in the programme.
SK Aggarwal, District and Sessions Judge, Chandigarh, who presided over the awareness session, stressed on the need to refer more and more cases to the mediation centre. He called upon the members of the Bar to cooperate in settlement of pending cases through mediation.
Lal Chand, Member Secretary, State Legal Services Authority, said matrimonial disputes referred by the Women Cell of the UT Police were also taken up by mediators and settled at the pre-litigative stage thereby saving the parties from filing multiple matrimonial and criminal cases in court.
