Porche driver Ashok Kumar, accused of killing three labourers and critically injuring five others, was granted bail within 24 hours of his arrest.
The city police view this as another accident given the fact that Kumar was not drunk and has not been charged with culpable homicide under Section 304 (ii) but was booked under Sections 279, 304-A and 427, all bailable offences.
The bail has angered the victim’s relatives and the shoddy investigations by the police.
“Our life has little value for them. A doctor was killed by an over speeding bus along with his daughter and the driver was given stern punishment. In our case the accused mows down so many persons besides critically injuring others but he was allowed to go, said Sharman whose mother and sister are struggling for their lives.
The police is trying to shield some big shot who might have been behind the wheels as complainant Dinesh Kumar said,” I told the cops that I saw two men running from car after the accident but they have not bothered to trace the second occupant of the car.
Although the police had the number of the car but it took them 24 hours to trace the accused, he alleged.
Police Commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk said, “Investigations are going on. Preliminary investigation revealed that it was a case of rash and negligent driving. If in due course, we come across something else, we will book him under other sections and re-arrest the accused.”
The accident took place day before yesterday at Shankar Chowk when the car being driven at a high speed hit the labourers. The deceased have been identified as Pappu (35), Ram Prasad (35) and Lakhan (25).
