The crime rate in the city has witnessed a substantial jump in the past three years, particularly crime against women and children. The city has become the “rape capital of India”.
Chief spokesperson for the DPCC Sharmistha Mukherjee stated this during a press conference here today. She said there had been an increase of 40% to 60% in the rape cases. The crime against women in the city alone in 2016 was reported 80,840.
She said it was very disturbing to note that crime against children and juveniles had been increasing at an alarming rate, which showed the deterioration of law and order situation under the BJP-led government at the Centre and the AAP government in Delhi.
She said AAP party, which burned a lot of candles on the Nirbhaya case issue, had failed to prevent rise in the crimes against women and children.
According to the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau for 2016, total crime against children were 15,191 in 2014, 17,653 in 2015 and 18,480 in 2016, which indicate that there was a 4.7% increase in the crime against children under the AAP government.
