The hostel room was allotted to four students. “Two students were having lunch outside. The victim and the other student were present in the room when Sonali asked her to go out of the room on some pretext. When the girls returned after some time, they found Sonali hanging from the ceiling,” said Dhaliwal while adding that she was immediately taken to a hospital at Sohana where she was declared brought dead.

The victim’s friends said Sonali had lost her father last year. She is survived by her mother and younger sister, who live in Bihar.

“Probably, she was under pressure for not doing well in exams,” said her friends. The college authorities claimed that she did not leave any suicide note behind.

“We have informed her family members,” said sub-inspector Rajiv Kumar, Station House Officer, Sohana police station.

The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.

Notably, this is the second such incident in the area in the past 10 days. On March 2, a Class IX student,  Amarjot Singh, had committed suicide after securing poorly in the pre-board exams at Phase 10. He had taken the extreme step despite the fact that his family members encouraged him a lot after his bad result, sources claimed.
