The sources said 40 undertrials were brought to the court at around 3 pm. After all undertrials were produced in the court, the police van was ready to take them back to the jail. During the counting of the inmates, four of them were found missing.

A search operation was carried out on the court premises. A hunt for the accused was also conducted at nearby areas, including the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT), Sector 43.

RP Upadhyay, IGP, UT, said the maintenance of the judicial lock-up was being looked after by the jail authorities. “An inquiry has been initiated to find out due to whose lapse the inmates fled,” he said.

Police sources said teams had been sent to various places to nab the inmates.
