With public assistance, the phillaur police foiled an attempt by three masked robbers to loot a money changer in Phillaur this morning. Two armed robbers were nabbed by the people and handed over to the police after a violent clash. The robbers opened fire in Guru Ravidasspura Mohalla to scare away the crowd. Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh, SP (D), and Phillaur DSP Parminder Singh rushed to Phillaur. A countrymade pistol four live cartridges and one empty were found at the site.
The third robber, identified as Harjinder Singh alias Golu of Bakapur village, was latter arrested by the police. His bike (PB-08CL-7691) was impounded, said DSP Parminder Singh.
Khakh said the robbers asked money changer Harmanjit Singh to hand over the cash to them. Harmanjit told them that the cash was lying in the toolbox of his scooter parked outside the shop. He gave them the scooter key. As the robbers stepped out of the shop, Harmanjit raised the alarm and tried to overpower the robbers.
The robbers ran towards a house after opening fire. One of them, Ravi Kumar of Bakapur village, was injured. A local resident, Hargobind Singh alias Honey too sustained bullet injuries. Both were hospitalised. The people pelted the robbers with stones.
