The district police claim to have busted a drug racket being operated from the Amritsar jail premises.
Hardial Singh Mann, Senior Superintendent of Police, said drug smuggler Sarabjit Singh lodged in the jail was running the racket. He said Sarabjit would lure other inmates and involve them in drug peddling.
“He had supplied drugs to places such as Karnal, Delhi, Ludhiana, Moga, Mansa and other towns and was operating through mobile phones,” he said, adding that the racket came to the fore when one Sukhchain Singh, who was also lodged in the jail, revealed that he and other persons had supplied drugs at Sarabjit’s behest.
The SSP said following the information, they arrested seven drug peddlers in three separate cases. “We have seized 2.262 kg heroin worth Rs 11 crore and two cars.” In the first case, Balwinder Kumar of Moga, Sukhchain Singh aka Kala of Rajasansi and Jarnail Singh of Amritsar were arrested with 1.48 kg of heroin. Another three persons identified as Harkirat Singh of Gurian Patti village in Moga and Sonu and Shani of Chhehrata in Amritsar were arrested with 520 gm of heroin.
In the third case, Nishan Singh of Basti Kishan Singh Kalan was nabbed with 260 gm of heroin.
