Jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh, cash stolen

A burglar made off with gold jewellery worth around Rs 50 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh from a house in Sector 36 when the entire family was asleep early this morning. The police suspect that the burglar knew about the room where the jewellery was kept in the house. The incident has been caught on a CCTV camera installed at the house.

The house belongs to the owner of a pharmacy company that has its office in Sector 34. According to the police, the burglar entered the house between 4.05 am and 4.10 am when the entire family was sleeping on the first floor of the house.

Sources said the burglar decamped with 10 gold bangles, two diamond necklaces, seven gold necklaces, eight pairs of gold earrings, a set of diamond earrings and Rs 1.5 lakh.

A woman family member was sleeping in the room when the theft took place. She saw the accused, but thought he was a servant.

The family came to know about the incident in the morning when they found the almirah ransacked.

Navdeep Singh Brar, ASP (South), said one person was caught on the CCTV camera and his accomplices might be outside the house. “We suspect that the accused had information about where the jewellery was kept as he only targeted that almirah,” the ASP said.

The ASP said the burglar left some valuables items, including costly watches, in the room.

A team of the crime branch and the Central Forensic Science Laboratory visited the spot and lifted fingerprints.

The police have registered a case of theft at the Sector 36 police station.
