LeT militant held in south Kashmir
Srinagar, March 31
The police today claimed to have arrested a top local militant of the Lashkar-e-Toiba in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
The police said Tanvir Ahmed Sofi of Pulwama was arrested in Anantnag.
“Tanvir Sofi, a category B Lashkar militant, was arrested from the Bijbehara locality today,” said Nitish Kumar, Deputy IGP, south Kashmir. “During questioning, Sofi revealed that many members were fed up and wanted to surrender,” Kumar said.
Sources said Sofi was an active overground worker of the Lashkar last year.
He was questioned by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for his role in the attack on a BSF convoy in Udhampur on August 5, 2015.
After questioning by the NIA, Sofi went underground and became an active militant, the sources said, adding that his arrest was a major success for security forces. —TNS
