Ludhiana, April 30
In yet another case of sham marriage, a Canadian girl, along with her three accomplices, duped a youth of Rs 58 lakh. The Haibowal police have registered a case against the alleged bride, Ramneet Kaur Purewal, middle man Harpreet Singh and his parents Surjit Singh and Bhupinder Kaur of Canada.
The complainant, Jaswinder Singh said in 2012, his maternal uncle and aunty visited Canada on a tourist visa.
In Canada, they came across the suspects, who assured them that they would visit India and after marriage they would take Jaswinder Singh to Canada.
Jaswinder Singh told the police that the accused took Rs 18 lakh from him for marriage preparations and Rs 40 lakh in lieu of taking the groom to Canada.
Jaswinder Singh said the accused took the money from him. However, after wedding, they fled to Canada. They kept assuring them that they would arrange for Jaswinder’s immigration to Canada in a few months.
Soon, they stopped attending Jaswinder’s phone calls. Feeling duped, Jaswinder Singh brought the matter to the notice of the Haibowal police and got a case registered.
Varinder Chopra, investigating officer, said Jaswinder Singh sold a piece of land to arrange the money. “We have registered a case and begun investigation,” said Chopra.
