Two masked youths robbed a jeweller of a gold chain at gunpoint at his Sector 56 shop here this afternoon.

Mukesh Kumar, who runs a jewellery shop at Palsora, claimed that the robbers, who came on a motorcycle, intended to commit a bigger heist but as he raised an alarm, they got scared and escaped with just a gold chain.

He said he surrendered the gold chain as the robbers threatened him by putting a ‘country-made pistol’ on his temple. The crime has been recorded by the CCTV camera installed inside the shop. The incident took place while the jeweller was alone at his shop at around 2.30 pm.

Nearby shopkeepers rushed to the spot but failed to note down the registration number of the motorcycle used by robbers.

The police said they had sent the CCTV footage of the crime to their counterparts in the neighbouring cities.

Inspector Ranjodh Singh, the SHO of Sector 39 police station, said a case had been registered under the IPC and the Arms Act. “The pistol appears to be a toy in the CCTV footage, but we are verifying it,” said the SHO.

A team of crime branch sleuths also reached the spot and examined the CCTV footage. — TNS
