A Mumbai-based travel agent has been booked for duping two youths of Rs 12.17 lakh on the pretext of sending them abroad.

The complainants, identified as Dilbar Singh and Harpal Singh of Himmat Singh Nagar, told the police that they had met Mohan Muttu Swami Pillai, a Mumbai-based travel agent, in 2012 through a woman, Saroj Rani, who also lives in Himmat Singh Nagar.

Dilbar and Himmat along with their friends, Daljit, Vikram and Malkit, had struck a deal with Swami for Rs 32 lakh for settling them to New Zealand.

According to the complainants, Muttu Swami told them that he would take them to New Zealand through Fiji.

On November 27, 2012, he reportedly told the youths that their flight to Fiji was from Delhi on November 29.

The duo stated in their complaint that on reaching Fiji, they checked into a hotel where they handed over the cash of Rs 12.17 lakh to Muttu Swami.

In the meantime, Vikram, one of their friends, fell ill. Muttu left them in the hotel at Fiji on the pretext of sending Vikram to India. Soon, Muttu snapped all contacts. Dilbar and Himmat got stranded in Fiji and somehow managed to return to India.

On reaching Ludhiana they reported the matter to the police and got the case registered against Muttu Swami under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code for cheating them.

The duo told the police that neither the accused returned the money nor he had got them settled in New Zealand.
