In an attempt to help reduce waiting time for transplant patients, the Registration of the Licensing Authority, Chandigarh, is going to introduce new driving Licence card which will mention the details of organ donors.

Sources said the initiative for the new cards was taken by Ajit Balaji Joshi, Deputy Commissioner, in a bid to make the city, the leader in organ donation.

Captain Karnail Singh, Registering and Licensing Authority, said the new card was ready and would be introduced soon.

He said all applicants for the driving licences will be asked to fill up a form given with the application. The applicants will be asked to mention as to which part of the body they would want to donate in case of death. If one wants to donate the whole body then it will also be mentioned. The cards will have the mobile number of a relative of the donors so that he will be informed after the death. A helpline number of the Administration will also be mentioned on the card so that the necessary help can be provided at the earliest for the transplant. Ajit Balaji Joshi, Deputy Commissioner, said the aim to mention the details of donors’ relative was to ensure that the organ could be transplanted on time. “We want to make it easier for the people to fill up the form as and when they apply for driving licences and encourage everyone to discuss their organ donation wishes with their friends and the relatives.” Joshi added.

He said that it was an effort to promote the noble cause in a big way. Recently, UT  Administrator VP Singh Badnore had also expressed his intention to promote organ donation in the city.
