The CIA wing of the district police has unearthed a racket involving government officials, criminals and middlemen under which overloaded trucks were allowed to pass through the state at the rate of Rs 3,000 per district per month.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Pankaj Nain said that members of the gang used to charge the amount from truckers in the name of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA).

Two members of the gang, including a clerk at the SDM office in Dadri district, have been arrested. Other accomplices of the arrested persons have also been identified and a hunt has been launched to nab them.

The police got a tip-off yesterday that one Suresh alias Sonu of Brahmanwas village in the district, along with his accomplices, charged money for letting trucks cross the district in connivance with the RTA office staff.

After paying Rs 3,000 per district, the truck was allowed to cross the district without getting challaned by the RTA officials. Some police personnel might be involved in the racket, said sources.

As per investigators, the criminal-government official network is spread across Rohtak, Hisar, Bhiwani, Dadri, Sonepat, Panipat and Jhajjar districts and may have offshoots in other states.

On getting information, a joint team of CIA-I and II, led by DSP Tahir Hussain, arrested Suresh near Bhali sugar mill. He has been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

He was produced before a local court, which remanded him in police custody for three days. A raiding party also arrested Nitesh alias Dimpi, an employee at the SDM office in Dadri district.
