Rajat of Thona village said he was employed at a nearby factory. He said on July 11 his parents had gone to Chandigarh for his father’s treatment, while he was at his job when the thieves took away jewellery and cash from his home. His parents lodged a complaint with the police the next day. The police asked him to report to a nearby police post at Purkhali, said Rajat.

He said when he reached there the police post in charge started questioning him as if he had committed the theft. When he opposed, they allegedly harassed him.

The victim’s father said Rajat had to be hospitalised as he could not move due to swelling in his feet.

Denying the allegations, the ASI said during investigation a few youths of the locality suspected that Rajat could have committed the theft so he just used harsh language during questioning at the police post.

The SP (I) said he had received a complaint in this regard and the DSP (investigation) has been asked to conduct an inquiry. — TNS
