Six involved in theft of power cables worth Rs 4 lakh arrested

In a major success, Haridwar police today arrested six accused involved in the theft of electric cables worth Rs 4 lakh from Pathri police station area here.

Six persons have been arrested in this regard, while the police are carrying out raids at several hideouts to nab rest of the five members of this gang.

This gang had carried out the theft on the night of January 3 at power substation yard, Bhattipur, Pathri, where they first handcuffed the substation employees Mahesh Kumar, Mithun and Vikas and then looted 1478-metre-long electric cables, weighing 24 quintals. The cost of the looted electric cables was assessed at Rs 4 lakh by the power officials.

A special investigation team guided by Superintendent of City Police and Lakshar Circle Officer and led by Pathri police station in charge Pradeep Bisht and Special Operations Group sub inspector Pradeep Rawat was formed to solve this case.

Today on a tip-off from an informer, the police came to know that five persons were seen with a light weight commercial loader near Gujar Basti early in the morning.

Pathri police team arrived at the spot and found only the driver sitting in the vehicle. When interrogated, the driver stated that some mud digging work is going inside the nearby forest for which he had come to pick and drop the labourers.

On suspicion the police team took along the driver inside the forest and saw five people digging out electric cables. The police seized the cable and during investigations it was found that this cable was stolen from the Bhattipur power substation only.

Talking to TNS Senior Superintendent of Haridwar Police Sweety Aggarwal said that owing to fear of the police, the gang members had hidden cables inside the dense forest terrain to escape from the police checking that very night, after carrying out the theft.

“Today, they had arrived to take back the looted cable but were nabbed by the police before they could run away with the stolen material. From them a wire cutter and light weight commercial truck ,that was used during the theft, was also recovered. Market rate has been put at Rs 4 lakh plus by the power corporation officials of the stolen cables and the police are looking out for the rest of the five members of this gang,” said Sweety.

The arrested persons include Kapil Kumar, resident of Naugaon, Sadab, Sundar Singh, Kayamuddin, Mohammed Azharuddin, Harveer Singh and Hari Om. They have confessed to their involvement in the cable theft.

The police are carrying out raids at various hideouts to nab the absconding persons, Bittu, Mafi,Yogesh,Chottu,Kunwar Sahab and Mumtiyaz.

Garhwal Inspector General Sanjay Gunjiyal has announced a cash award of Rs 5000 while district police chief has added Rs 2,500 to this amount to be given to the investigating police team personnel police team that busted this case.
