The police have arrested three youths for stealing Rs 2.84 lakh from a safe of a Reliance Fresh store in Phase VII here on July 5.
SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the accused had been identified as Sajjan, alias Sahil (23 ), a resident of Sector 52, Chandigarh, Harbans Singh, alias Sidhu ( 22), and Sandeep, alias Seepa( 21), both living as tenants in Matour village.
Bhullar said Sajjan, who had studied up to Class VII, worked as a labourer at the Reliance store for two-and-a-half-years while Harbans Singh, a postgraduate, worked at the store for four months. Sandeep, who studied up to Class V, was employed with a contractor of the Ansal group.
He said of the Rs 2.84 lakh cash stolen from the safe, Rs 2.43 lakh had been recovered. The remaining amount has been spent by them. The police have also recovered a hammer, a screw driver and a wrench used by the suspects to break open the safe.
The police said they had confessed to the crime and broke open the safe at night. They turned the direction of the CCTVs to avoid identification.
The police have registered a case under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC at the Matour police station on a compliant of store manager Jaspreet Singh.
