Scores of councillors from BJP-ruled MCDs led by three mayors today staged a protest outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence, demanding clearance of their pending dues by the AAP government.

During the protest, BJP councillors raised slogans against the Kejriwal government and slammed it for calling a two-day special session of the Delhi Assembly to discuss the working of civic bodies, saying the move was only intended to “defame” the municipal corporations.

Councillors and mayors alleged that the city government had not implemented the report of the Fourth Finance Commission so far following which all the BJP-controlled civic bodies were facing fund crunch.

During the protest, the police tried to pacify the councillors and three mayors, but they did not relent. Thereafter, the police detained them and brought them to the nearest police station where they were released after sometime.

To express their protest against the government's decision to call the two-day special session starting tomorrow, all three MCDs - East Delhi Municipal Corporation, North Delhi Municipal Corporation and South Delhi Municipal Corporation - have called a one-day joint session at Ramlila Ground on June 9.

Graft responsible for delay in flyover construction: AAP

Hitting back at the BJP, the AAP today alleged that the MCDs were unable to complete two flyovers for the last seven years with its cost escalating and alleged “corruption” as the “real reason” behind the delay.

Addressing a news conference, AAP’s convenor Dilip Pandey said the MCDs have been constructing two flyovers in Bijwasan and Sadar Bazar for the last two years.

Pandey alleged the budget of these two flyovers escalated by Rs 85 crore over the years. On the one hand, there is Aam Aadmi Party model of governance where flyovers are being constructed in 10 months with a reduced cost. And on the other these two flyovers are being constructed for the last seven years with cost escalation. “There can be no reason for the delay of these flyovers other than corruption,” Pandey said.

Taking a jibe at Vijender Gupta, Leader of Opposition in Delhi Legislative Assembly, the AAP’s Delhi chief said the BJP leader, who is “so prompt” on approaching the Anti-Corruption Branch against AAP MLAs and Delhi Government, should also approach the agency to probe the alleged corruption in the civic bodies. — Agencies
