New Delhi, March 5
Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress (DPMC) president, Sharmishtha Mukherjee today launched “Swachh Mahila Swasth Mahila” campaign to educate young girls and women belonging to marginalised sections to maintain hygiene during menstruation.
DPMC also distributed free sanitary napkins on this occasion. This programme would be organised in all the 14 districts of Delhi.
The Central Government has imposed 12 per cent GST on sanitary napkins. She said that Congress had launched a signature campaign to remove GST from sanitary napkins and collected 50 lakh signatures. The Congress activists met Finance Minister Arun Jaitely to remove GST from sanitary napkins but nothing was done.
Mukherjee said that women should not consider menstruation as a stigma and accept it as a natural phenomenon which all women go through. A workshop will be conducted educating young girls and women belonging to marginalised sections on the importance of personal hygiene during menstruation and otherwise.
Sheila Dikshit, former Chief Minister of Delhi, who was present on the occasion, addressed the gathering by recalling how during Congress regime in Delhi, free sanitary napkins were given to young girls in the government schools from Classes 6 to 12, which has been stopped by the AAP Government. – TNS
