Even as the redrawing of the zones of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has not altered the number of zones (six), the creation of new Keshavpuram zone in the city will enable a uniform distribution of work among officials on the job.
The exercise is said to have been carried out for the first time since the carving out of the original zones of the MCD, according to North Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor Preety Agarwal.
The erstwhile MCD was established in late 1950s and it was in 2012 trifurcated into North, South and East Municipal Corporations of Delhi (NDMC, SDMC and EDMC), respectively.
Lt Governor Anil Baijal had recently approved the proposal of redrawing of zonal boundaries under the NDMC.
Under it, Keshavpuram zone was carved out while City and Sadar-Paharganj zones of the NDMC were merged into a single entity — City-Sadar Paharganj Zone. New zones are expected to bring more focus to the areas fall under the individual zones, said another official.
The NDMC has 104 wards spread over six zones. Before the redrawing, the zones were — Rohini, Civil Lines, City, Sadar Paharganj, Narela and Karol Bagh and after the change, too, the total number of zones remains unchanged.
According to the revised municipal zonal boundaries the New Keshavpuram zone will have 18 wards, Karol Bagh 13, Narela 16, City-Sadar Paharaganj 13, Rohini zone 26 and 18 wards in Civil Lines zone.
The SDMC, too, has 104 wards covering four zones — Central, South, West and Najafgarh whereas the EDMC has a total of 64 wards spread across two zones — Shahdara-North and Shahdara-South.
