Sealing: Lajpat Nagar traders hold protest, call Delhi band on March 13
New Delhi, March 9
Shopkeepers in Lajpat Nagar today agitated in protest against sealing of 400 shops by civic authorities for alleged misuse and encroachment of properties. The traders said the shopkeepers had paid conversion and other charges to the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.
The agitating shopkeepers said they had been doing their business in the market for decades. They had given employment to two to three salesmen in each shop. They all have become unemployed now. The suppliers are also victim of the MCD action.
The action was taken at the instance of a Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee. The drive had begun in December with sealing of major shops and eateries in the posh Defence Colony.
Besides, 33 units were also sealed in the GK Enclave-II and various other colonies, the civic body said in a statement.
The traders said if sealing is not stopped and sealed establishments are not opened, they would go on strike on March 13. Entire Delhi will be closed.
The AAP in a statement said special law was only provision to stop the sealing. – TNS
