After four years of consistent efforts, Sikhism has been recognised as a legal religion in Chile.

According to Mexico-based SikhNet, a non-profit organisation that provides spiritual education and resources, there have been over 200 legally recognised spiritual paths in Chile, but until two weeks back, the Sikh religion was not one of them.

Chile’s fledgling Sikh community started the campaign four years ago by preparing legal documents that described basic information regarding the Sikh religion and its religious values and symbols.

In terms of what this means to them, Rupinder Kaur of Sikh Dharma, Chile, said it was an incredibly important development. “The legalisation will help prevent discrimination. Sikhs will be able to wear the kirpan and Sikh attire without any issues. Also they can build a gurdwara and pursue other religious projects as well as receive donations,” she said.

She also said with legalisation they would have more safety in jobs, health system and political system.
