Abacus competition
The grand prize distribution function of the Challengers 11th National-Level Abacus Competition was held here on Tuesday, in which eight students of various schools from the tricity were awarded. The winners are Gracy, Vanshika Tyagi, Gitansh, Kush Goel, Virendra Meena, Arsh, Palak Mittal and Keshav Bhargav. A new national record was also made this year, in which Priyanshu Mittal of Muktsar attempted 100 sums in just 6.33 minutes with 100 per cent accuracy. As many as 10,347 students of various states participated in the competition on October 16. They had to solve 100 sums in 20 minutes.
Death anniversary of Shakespeare
To commemorate the 400th death anniversary of the Bard, an exhibition and stage performances were organised at St Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44-D. Students immortalised the journey of Shakespeare to the Bard by stepping into the world of renowned comedies and tragedies. The students displayed the legend’s plays and sonnets on different items like pillows, cushions etc.
Inter-school contests
Inter-school Competitions were held by Sri Guru Harkrishan Model School, Sector 38-D. Around 200 students from various city schools participated with great zeal and enthusiasm in different competitions like bookmark, poster and rangoli making. The objective behind the event was to promote creativity and innovative spirit among schoolchildren.
Science exhibition
A science exhibition was organised by Mount Carmel School, Sector 47-B. Students of Classes IV to XII participated. Various exhibits were prepared by students that were put on display. The whole school was decked up with posters, cut-outs, slogans and banners related to science and technology. The aviation club of the school exhibited a static-cum-aerobatic flying display. Students explained in detail principles of flight, manufacturing process in 3D printing techniques and flight controls through the state of the art computerised flight simulators.
Student awarded
Madhur Gupta, a Class XII student of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, has been awarded the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam IGNITE Award for his idea of secured currency notes. The National Innovation Foundation has partnered with Nicklodeon to promote creativity and innovation in children.
Dance competition
An inter-house dance competition was held at Karan Public School, Panchkula. Children with the help of their house teachers choreographed performances. Emerald House was declared first while Saphire House secured the second position. To test their knowledge about the school, an inter-house diary quiz was organised. The children were asked various questions regarding their school. Scarlet House bagged the first position in quiz.
Activity marks Diwali
An activity was held to judge students of DAV School, Mohali, for various themes related to the festival of Diwali. Students made various charts and posters. Students of Class IX-Manmeet, Harveen, Jyoti, Sheetal, Shailja, Parneet, Parul, Mehak, Jasmin, Harshita, Kavita, Ridhima- and a student of Class VII, Smitha, took part in the activity.
Sports Day
The annual sports day was organised at Dasmesh Khalsa Public Senior Secondary School, Phase 3B-1, Mohali. A welcome speech was given by Principal Leena Singh. Head girl Gursimranpreet Kaur took the oath in the presence of the audience. The highlights of the day were yoga, PT, bhangra and giddha. Prizes were given by the chief guest to the best three students in the class events. Sanjeev Kumar was declared the best athlete of the session 2016-17.
Grandparents’ Day
Strawberry Wonder Kids School, Wadhawa Nagar, Mohali, celebrated Grandparents’ Day. Grandparents were felicitated by students and the school staff. It was a visual treat to watch the children dressed up to take charge for the day. The programme commenced with a tilak ceremony followed by the lighting of a lamp and the Gayatri mantra, sung by tiny tots.
Teacher training
The five-day orientation programme for special training teachers under the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, entered the second day On Tuesday. The areas of focus included heath, hygiene and sanitation. The participants were informed about balanced nutrition, sanitation and precautions to be taken to prevent the spread of dengue and chikungunya. Suman Sharma, mission co-ordinator, and Sangeeta Bhasin, assistant project coordinator (APC), STC, were also present. They also discussed the teaching-learning project, an innovative methodology to deal with the students who required bridging to bring them on par with students of age appropriate class and deal with multi-grade teaching. — TNS
