Adesh Medical University has announced a hike of Rs 18.17 lakh (45 per cent) in the tuition fee for the MBBS course.
The fee is up from Rs 40.39 lakh to Rs 58.56 lakh. The private university, which offers 150 MBBS and 100 BDS seats, runs Adesh medical and dental colleges in Bathinda.
A student seeking admission in the MBBS course in this university also has to deposit Rs 3 lakh as security and Rs 1.8 lakh as development charges.
If a candidate leaves the college any time after the admission deadline, the security will be forfeited and the student will have to pay the balance fee for the course.
Five other private medical colleges in the state charge Rs 13.43 lakh for the course for 50 per cent of the total seats under the government quota.
For 35 per cent management quota seats, these colleges charge Rs 40.28 lakh for the course. For 15 per cent seats under the NRI quota, the fee is $1.1 lakh (over Rs 67 lakh).
Adesh Medical College has no government quota seat. For 85 per cent of the 150 MBBS seats, a student has to pay Rs 58.56 lakh as tuition fee. For 15 per cent seats in the NRI quota, the fee is $1.1 lakh.
The total fee for the MBBS course in the three government medical colleges of Punjab is Rs 4.8 lakh.
Justifying the fee hike, Kulwant Singh, assistant registrar, Adesh Medical University, said, “Our medical college is not dependent on government funding. The students have to pay for capital assets such as labs and other infrastructure.”
The university, however, has slashed the fee for the BDS course by 30 per cent. From Rs 10.21 lakh last year, the fee is now Rs 7.65 lakh.
The fee has been cut as the private dental colleges have not been able to fill BDS seats in the past three years.
