Bathinda, January 17

Adesh University Vice-Chancellor Dr GPI Singh has been summoned by the Medical Council of India (MCI) for his second hearing in the ongoing dummy faculty case on January 18.

Dr GPI Singh, who was officiating as principal in the 2009-2011 term, had allegedly signed and verified the fake documents of a ghost faculty member, Dr Muktanjali Arya.

She was wrongly shown working full time in Adesh during the MCI’s final inspection in 2011 and was promoted.

The VC feigned ignorance in the case when called for his version on the issue. Principal, Adesh Institute, Dr Harkiran Kaur, too claimed that she didn’t know about the VC’s hearing before the MCI. On ghost faculty, she maintained that the college had regular faculty and no ghost ones.

Besides the VC, the MCI had summoned former principals of Adesh Institute, including Dr Varinder Mohan (served as principal from 2006-09) and Dr AS Sekhon (served in 2005-06). However Dr AS Sekhon (retired) claimed he would not attend the hearing as nothing in the case concerned him.

Certain members — shown to be faculty members — were engaged in only conducting examinations as ‘internal examiner’ at Adesh Institute like Dr Ajit Singh Khurana who owns and runs a clinic in Ludhiana. Dr Khurana got the internal exams conducted in January.
