  • No coaching from anywhere
  • Totally relied on self-study.
  • Discipline key to his success
  • Studied for 12 or 16 hours a day.

His brother Ajaypal Sharma is an IPS officer, posted as SSP in Hathras, UP.

He did his schooling from RS Model School, Shastri Nagar, and completed his MBBS from Government Medical College, Patiala, in 2013. He has harboured the dream to become an IAS officer since his schooldays, he says. His father Amarjit Pal Sharma guided him and principal of RS Model School Mohal Lal Kalra inspired him to pursue a career in Civil Services.

He said he did not take coaching from anywhere and totally relied on self-study. Discipline was the key to his success in the exam. He used to study for 12 or 16 hours a day. He took Punjabi literature as his optional subject in the exam after guidance from his father who retired as a Punjabi teacher.

He said literature helped him gain a better understanding of society, he said.

Ayush Garg, all-India Rank 63

Success begets success. Achieving one milestone inspired Ayush to achieve another. Having secured all-India Rank 9 in Chartered Accountancy exam in 2013 gave him the confidence to achieve a higher goal, and he notched the 63rd all-India rank in the UPSC exam in his first attempt.

The initial inspiration to shine in the CA exam came from equalling his father Pawan Garg’s all-India rank 11th in the CA exam.  Ayush (24) said he had worked in a private company for a year after completing his CA but quit the job to prepare for the Civil Services exam.

“I wanted to give it back to society and Civil Services was the avenue to personal and professional satisfaction of serving society, job diversity and decision-making authority,” he said.

The key to his success was hard work, as he said:  “No matter what people might say these days, that working smart is important. But there is absolutely no short-cut to success. I used to spend at least 10 hours daily studying on my own.”
