In a first, three students of final year of the University Institute of Information Technology (UIIT), Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), have developed android application for the university.

The application, developed by Dikshant Sharma (developer and tester), Girish Sharma (developer and designer) and Pradeep Singh (tester and data management), provides all the necessary information about the university, including HPU at a glance, brief history, holiday, contact numbers, notifications, results, examination dates and schedule.

All information hitherto available in the two sites, www.hpuniv.nic.in and www.hpuniv.in, is replicated in the Android version, besides providing other new features like real-time navigation to university, find HPU with Google map, trends and news related to university and education.

The application also provides a platform for interaction among students, besides a link to the national ragging helpline, enabling students to send their grievances and complaints in this regard through their mobiles.

The three-member team that developed the application said cell phone users were facing problems in getting access to websites of HPU through mobile devices and another issue that needed to be addressed was that information was scattered in two websites of which one of the site was not updated and we decided to make the website user-friendly by making an Android application so that everyone could easily access all university-related information.”

Akshay Bharadwaj, under whose guidance the project was conceived and visualized, said, “We had thought to develop the application in two months, but the students completed the task in 15 days and developed the application “HP University” which could be downloaded from Google Playstore and supports all the Android versions starting from Ice-cream Sandwich 4.0 till the latest Marshmallow 6.0 is functional and already on testing.

Till now, more than 280 persons have downloaded the application and in future we would also offer the department-wise membership for university students with the help of the HPU authorities,” said Dikshant and Girish.

HPU Vice-Chancellor ADN Bajpai, when contacted, said he was very happy over the achievement of the University Institute of Information Technology students. “I have always stressed on research and practical training and developing applications during the course period would not only instill confidence among students, but would also enrich their bio-data,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
