Attack on college principal: ABVP activists go on hunger strike, demand impartial probe

ABVP activists today went on a five-day chain hunger strike in front of the Vidhan Sabha. They demanded an impartial probe into the assault on the principal of Government College, Sanjauli, on August 21.

They also sought action against the erring teachers. “Our activists have been arrested but no action has been taken against the college teachers who brutally roughed the students, including a girl,” said Naveen, state organising secretary of the ABVP, adding that they had submitted a memorandum to the Shimla SP.

ABVP state secretary Ashish Sekta said they would gheroa the Vidhan Sabha on August 28 in support of their demands, including scrapping of the Students Central Association (SCA) elections, fee hike, implementation of the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) and commercialisation of education.

“We will file a complaint with the State Women Commission and will also submit the video showing that teachers roughing up the students, including a girl, tomorrow,” he added.

The ABVP leaders also demanded scrapping of the semester system saying the report of the committee constituted to review the fee hike, which was to be made public in one month, had not been disclosed even after 10 months and the students were compelled to pay hefty fee.

Around 22 students of Kotshera College observed hunger strike today while students of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) will go on strike tomorrow. Students of the RKMV, Evening College and five-year law courses will sit on the strike on August 26, 27 and 28.
