It’s official now that the BJP group and the Ashok Goyal group would jointly contest the upcoming Syndicate elections of Panjab University.

The groups are coming together after a gap of two years. They had jointly contested in December 2012 for the term January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2013. Now, they have again decided to go for the polls together.

The Syndicate elections are scheduled for December 6.

BJP group representative Dr RS Jhanji, fellow, PU, confirmed that the group today decided to fight the Syndicate elections with the Ashok Goyal group. He said the decision was taken after a number of meetings with the Goyal group, adding that the division of seats among the groups was yet to be finalised.

It may be mentioned that for the last two years, the BJP group had been supporting the University group, which comprised of the faculty of the University, DAV and Chatrath groups.

In recent BJP meetings, an objection was raised that in the last year, members of the BJP group were sidelined by the University group and were not consulted by the authorities in any major issue related with the university.

In 2014, the Ashok Goyal group did not have alliance with any of the four groups, namely the University group, the BJP group, the Chatrath group and the DAV group, that had joined hands to contest the elections against it.

Political pundits are of the view that if any group joins hands with the Ashok Goyal group, the alliance would be a strong contender in the Syndicate elections this year.

The University group has to strengthen its voters in two faculties, including medical and arts, as last year also, these seats were won unopposed by the Goyal group even as the latter was contesting all alone.
